uvær shows when rain or snow starts, how heavy it gets and when it stops. Find help here with forecasts, alerts, location and Apple Watch.

Getting started

Where does uvær work?

uvær is made for places in Norway. The detailed precipitation forecast needs radar coverage. Where there is no coverage, or radar is temporarily unavailable, the app shows an hourly forecast from a weather model. This gives less detail about when a shower will arrive.

How far ahead does uvær show the weather?

With radar coverage, uvær shows precipitation for the next two hours in five-minute intervals. Without radar coverage, the app shows an hourly forecast.

Which versions of iOS and watchOS do I need?

You need iOS 26.1 or later on iPhone and watchOS 27.0 or later on Apple Watch. You can use the iPhone app without an Apple Watch.

Do I need an account?

No. You do not need to create an account, and the app has no ads. Read about the data uvær uses in the privacy policy.

Alerts and location

How do I turn on rain alerts?

Open Settings in uvær and choose Rain alerts. Turn on alerts for up to five saved places, or choose Follow my location. Alerts are off until you turn them on. When a shower approaches, you may get a notification or a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Turn off the same options to stop future alerts.

What does “Track this place” do?

The button starts a Live Activity for that place on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. It can last up to eight hours. The app also asks for permission to alert you about new showers. If you allow this, alerts for the place continue after the Live Activity ends. Turn them off under Settings → Rain alerts in uvær.

Why did I not get an alert?

Check that the place is turned on under Settings → Rain alerts in uvær. Also open uvær’s settings in iOS and check that notifications are allowed. Follow my location also needs Always location access and Background App Refresh. The forecast applies to the last position your iPhone reported. Apple controls delivery, so alerts can be delayed or may not arrive.

Does stopping a Live Activity turn off alerts?

No. It ends that Live Activity. Alerts about new showers stay on. To turn them off, open Settings → Rain alerts in uvær and turn off the place or Follow my location.

Which location access does uvær need?

While Using the App is enough to show the weather and radar where you are. Alerts for saved places do not need Always location access. Only Follow my location needs it, so your iPhone can report location changes when the app is closed.

What does “Follow my location” do?

This feature lets uvær alert you about showers at the last position your iPhone reported. iOS sends low-power updates when you move some distance, so the position is not updated continuously. The alert text shows that it applies to your last reported position, which may no longer be where you are.

The forecast

What does “~15 min” mean, and why can the time change?

“~15 min” means about 15 minutes. Showers can grow, change direction or disappear before they reach you. Rain can therefore arrive earlier, later or not at all. The times are estimates that can change when the forecast updates.

Why does uvær say “precipitation” instead of “rain” or “snow”?

The radar data shows the amount of precipitation. uvær shows “rain” or “snow” when the weather forecast can distinguish between them. Otherwise, the app uses “precipitation”, which also includes sleet.

What do “light”, “moderate” and “heavy” mean?

The words describe the amount of precipitation per hour and follow the Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s radar colour scale: very light below 0.2 mm/h, light from 0.2 to below 1 mm/h, moderate from 1 to below 5 mm/h, heavy from 5 to below 15 mm/h and very heavy from 15 mm/h. For snow, the numbers show the amount of water when the snow melts, not the snow depth.

Apple Watch, widgets and battery

Does the Apple Watch app need the iPhone?

Apple Watch finds its own location and shows the forecast and radar without fetching them from your iPhone. Background alerts are set up on iPhone and mirrored to Apple Watch.

Why do widgets and complications show older weather data?

Widgets, complications and the Smart Stack use a forecast saved on the device. If you have turned on alerts, they may also read the latest saved forecast from our service. They do not fetch a new forecast from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute themselves. Apple decides when they can refresh, so they may show older data than the app.

How can I reduce battery use?

Follow my location uses low-power location updates from iOS. Live Activities and radar playback also use battery. To reduce use, you can turn off Follow my location, stop active Live Activities and keep alerts only for the places you need.

Data and deletion

How do I delete my data?

Choose Stop tracking in the app if you are tracking a place with a Live Activity. Then open Settings → Rain alerts, turn off Follow my location and turn off alerts for all saved places. The app asks the server to delete the registrations. If this fails, it tries again later. After reinstalling the app or changing phones, you may need help with this. Write to support@uvær.app. Weather data, security records and backups have separate retention periods, described in the privacy policy.
